In a remote village nested in Kendu Bay, Kenya, life has never been easy for Syprina Auma. At 75 years old, she has endured the hardships of rural poverty, the loss of her husband a decade ago, and the daily struggle to maintain her dignity in the face of overwhelming challenges. But nothing could have prepared her for the devastating storm that swept through her village in March 2024, leaving her home in ruins and her spirit shattered.

Syprina’s house, already fragile and dilapidated, was no match for the ferocious winds and rain. The roof was torn away, the walls crumbled, and what little protection she had from the elements was gone. With no proper toilet, no clean water source, and no safe shelter, Syprina was left exposed to the harsh realities of nature. Her two grown children, themselves grappling with poverty, were unable to help. She felt alone, vulnerable, and without hope.
But Syprina’s story did not end there. In her darkest hour, a glimmer of hope emerged.
Passion of Hope International (PHI), in partnership with the Kamser Seka Widows CBO,
stepped in to help. Recognizing the urgency of her situation—and that of Susan Atieno,
another widow whose home had also been destroyed—PHI launched a fundraising campaign to rebuild their homes. The goal was not just to provide shelter but to restore
dignity, safety, and sustainability to their lives.

The journey to rebuild Syprina’s home was not without its challenges. Funds had to be raised quickly, as the looming rainy season threatened to worsen her already dire situation. PHI reached out to friends, donors, and supporters worldwide, sharing Syprina’s story and appealing for help. The response was nothing short of miraculous. Generous donations poured in, each one a testament to the power of compassion and collective action.
With the funds secured, the work began. Local laborers and volunteers came together to
construct a safe, two-room house for Syprina. But this was no ordinary home. PHI went above and beyond to ensure that the house was not just a shelter but a sustainable haven. A rainwater harvesting system was installed, complete with a holding tank to collect water from the rooftop.
A kitchen garden was also established, giving Syprina the means to grow her own crops and support her livelihood. For the first time in years, she would have access to clean water and the ability to provide for herself. As the construction progressed, Syprina watched with a mixture of awe and gratitude. Each brick laid, each beam raised, was a step toward a new beginning. When the house was finally completed, it was more than just a structure—it was a symbol of hope, resilience, and the transformative power of Ubuntu.

Syprina moved into her new home with joy and emotion. Her face brightened` as she stepped inside, her hands trembling as she touched the sturdy walls and solid roof that would now protect her from the elements. “I never thought I would see this day,” she whispered, her voice choked with emotion. “Thank you, PHI, and thank you to everyone who made this possible. You have given me more than a home—you have given me my life back.”
The impact of this project extends far beyond the physical structure of the house. For Syprina, it means safety, dignity, and the opportunity to live with purpose. The rainwater
harvesting system and kitchen garden will provide her with a sustainable source of water and food, empowering her to support herself and improve her quality of life. The burden of poverty has been lightened, and her future is now filled with hope.
This success story is a testament to what can be achieved when compassion meets action. It is a reminder that no one should have to face life’s storms alone and that together, we can rebuild lives and restore hope. Syprina’s journey from despair to dignity is a beacon of light, inspiring us all to continue working toward a world where everyone has a safe place to call home.

As we celebrate this milestone, we are reminded that there are still many others like Syprina and Susan who need our help. The work is far from over, but with your continued support, we can bring hope and healing to more widows and vulnerable individuals in Kendu Bay and beyond.
Thank you for being part of this transformative journey. Together, we are not just building houses—we are rebuilding lives.
With heartfelt gratitude,The Passion of Hope International Team and Kamser Seka Team.
