PHI Kenya - Nakuru Hub

water provided for school students to improve hygiene and consequentially access to education

Honey Production Venture:

The Honey Production venture will dramatically improve the financial position of participating small-holder farmers in Gilgil Sub-county, of Nakuru County, Kenya. Previously time-bound with the need to find water, these homesteads received PHI assistance with rainwater harvesting. Capturing rainwater for gardens, planting new trees, and generating income through beekeeping demonstrates our triple-bottom-line approach (Planet+People=Productivity). PHI and PH-K act as co-investors with the community to transform ecological, physical, and economic health.

Adopt-A-School:

PH-K supports Kenya's push for improved education of its children in under-resourced communities. Schools lacking a water supply are outfitted with rainwater harvesting from the roofs. The water is treated in-situ for cooking and drinking.  Grey water is directed to catchment areas for tree/fruit nurseries and irrigating gardens for the school kitchen. Regenerative agriculture principles in the garden allow for all students to receive healthy lunches. Funding is sourced through partnerships with schools in the United States.

Chama Model:

PHI developed a micro-lending program, whereby community members form savings groups, called chamas, and invest in solutions to their own problems, thereby taking complete ownership of the project.

Through these chamas, PHI is able to support members by installing 5,000-liter water tanks for rainwater harvesting as well as beehives for their livelihood. We also provide them with hand washing stations to help them prevent water-borne diseases. Villagers can only get water tanks and/or beehives with the approval of fellow group members, based on the strength and consistency of their savings.
