Healthcare Access
Clinic Kongasis, Gilgil, Kenya
The health issues faced by residents in rural areas of Kenya differ greatly from those in urban and peri-urban areas. As part of a community assessment, PHI noted several key challenges for rural residents in Nakuru County, Kenya. They included: a disproportionate burden of chronic disease relative to the general public, insufficient or no health insurance, poor infrastructure, poorly stocked and inadequately equipped health facilities, low education and low health literacy, and lack of specialty care services.
PHI supports the operation of two primary care clinics in this region (Ole-Boysen Clinic and Clinic Kongasis). Ole-Boysen is a certified clinic by the Ministry of Health in Kenya and is recognized as one of the best-managed facilities in the county. By sharing costs and ownership of the clinic with the community, PHI has developed a sustainable model to manage these challenges.
